Starting Seeds Indoors in California

It’s a new year, and we know you all are ready to jump into setting some new gardening goals. Here at The Curious Gardens, we always are looking to get a head start for spring.

Starting seeds indoors is a great way to get a jump start on the gardening season and to have a wider variety of plants to choose from. If you live in California, now is the perfect time to start thinking about getting your seeds started for the spring. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Cherry Tomatoes
Cherry tomatoes can be started early and produce all the way into the summer months.

Choose the right seeds:

Not all seeds should be started at the same time. Some, like tomatoes and peppers, need to be started early because they have a longer growing season. Others, like lettuce and radishes, can be sown directly into the ground later on. Check the back of your seed packets for specific planting instructions.

Use the right containers:

Starting Seeds

Seedlings need room to grow, so be sure to use pots or trays that are large enough to accommodate their roots. You can use small pots or seed starting trays, or you can reuse containers like yogurt cups or egg cartons. Just be sure to punch holes in the bottom for drainage.

Use the right soil:

Seedlings need a light, well-draining soil mix to thrive. You can purchase seed starting mix or make your own by combining equal parts peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite.

Provide the right environment:

Seeds need warmth, light, and moisture to germinate. Keep your seeds in a warm location (around 70 degrees Fahrenheit) and provide them with plenty of light. You can use a grow light or place them near a sunny window. Be sure to keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged.

Transplant carefully:

When your seedlings are ready to be moved to the garden, be sure to handle them gently and transplant them on a cloudy day or in the evening to reduce stress. Water them well and mulch around the base to help keep the soil moist and weed-free.

By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to having a successful spring garden in California.
