Frankincense and Myrrh

Hello curious friends! Today we will be exploring the wonderful world of incense. More specifically, Frankincense and Myrrh.

Ancient Treasures

Frankincense and Myrrh have an ancient past deeply tied to religious practices throughout the world. You may remember the names from their association with the Bible. Specifically the tale of the three wise men who brought Frankincense, Myrrh and gold to Jesus. Why would they choose to bring these two incense resins as a gift alongside something as precious as gold? Because in the eyes of many, frankincense and myrrh were just as valuable as gold because of the spiritual properties they were said to exhibit.

How to Use Frankincense and Myrrh

Frankincense has been used as a method of worship. Many believed it to be a powerful gift to God. It is often burned in temples and churches. The vessel in the image below is a specific device for burning incense called a Thurible. Medicinally, Frankincense has also been used as a supplement to help inflammation and wound healing.

Myrrh is often associated with death and mourning. It aids in lifting and restoring your spirits during times of hardship. Medicinally myrrh is thought to have anti-bacterial properties. Myrrh is also wonderful for keeping away insects.

These incenses are made from resins pulled from trees. Frankincense is made from the resin of the Boswellia tree. Myrrh is derived from the Commiphora species of trees. Once the resin is dried it forms little crystal-like balls and is then burned. From that point it is used mainly as an accent to worship and meditations to boost your spirits and restore your mind. Place a charcoal tablet onto a bed of sand. Then light the tablet, once it turns grey place your bits of incense resin upon it. Then sit back and enjoy the scent.

Burning this incense during your rituals that take place outdoors will keep away the bugs, as well as surround you with a scent that is both mysterious and ancient.
